Hi all,i am thinking of buying lightroom is the new 3 version a download only or is it available as a new full version,(does that make sense).
i have just bought elements 8.

Lightroom 3 is still in Beta so you can't actually buy it yet.

You can get a copy of the Beta version from the Adobe Labs site, please note that although the Beta is pretty solid they dont guarantee that it isnt going to go on a rampage and kill your family.

Also the Beta 3 is not fully featured. Some functions are not active, and from what I read there may be other features in the final release not in the beta. Also the Beta catalog is not compatible with the current version 2.

Adobe say it's for evaluation and feedback

I couldnt wait i,ve ordered Lightroom 2 so i can have a play over christmas! :D

Does anyone no if there is networked database support in Lightroom 3?

Sorry for the hijack.

I successfully use Lightroom with my images and catalogue stored on a network attached storage device (NAS box) with no problems - never really understood what the problem was supposed to be with running it over a network!

I think the problem is the data for the image edits has to be stored on the system disk and not with the images on the network storage, from what i,ve heard.
If this is not the case happy days. :D

It is more from a performance point of view from what I understand, the bandwidth available to a network disk compared to an internal/USB/Firewire one are usually vastly different.

I store my catalog on my local disk and then the images elsewhere, whether it be a local firewire disk for recent shoots or a network drive for archived stuff :)

OP: If I were you I would wait until LR3 comes out to buy it as you will kick yourself if you buy the full version of LR2 and then two weeks later LR3 comes out, they wont be a free upgrade either :s

The problem with networks and Lightroom is that it can't access a database that's stored on a network server. The easiest way to solve this is to keep the catalogue on a local drive, and store the images on a your network. Problem is if you are running a wireless network you may hit a problem with transfer speeds, especially if you are using a wireless "g" network.

I've had a quick play with the beta of LR3, and the biggest improvement for me is the watermarking. You can now have a graphic png of your choice and overlay it using transparency. Much better than the simple text-only I've found in LR2.

But I have no idea when LR3 is to come out and if Adobe have made public a release date...

Ta Chappers

i have lightroom 2 given to me from a friend so do you think i should carry on and use this,
regards john.

As long as it is a legit licensed copy.

The upgrade from v2 to v3 will be cheaper than buying v3 outright too.
