I'm after a Full copy of Lightroom 2 to get started on some decent cataloguing of my feeble attempts  at photography. Where is the best place to get this LEGALLY at a good price?

Or should I consider trying to get v1 and the v2 upgrade?

The usual search options only give me guide books or v1 or upgrade discs.

Academic licences are a possibility (if available) due to family members who will also be using the software.

Cheers

Nick.

Ooooh nice, I'll give them a call on monday (fingers so crossed I can't take any more pictures this weekend!)

Buy via Adobe.com I got my Lightroom v1 to v2 upgrade for about £43.

Buy it via the US site, Adobe have us in the UK marked down as brainless idiots who will pay twice as much for the same thing, which is mental for an electronic download and e-mailed licence.

OR

Adobe are required by law to charge us the relevant taxes and duties imposed by our government?

Not by our - by EU and still only partially. There are no duties - Adobe operates as EU entity so they don't actually import anything (they do say that part of their high prices outside of US is due to all extra stuff/marketing etc they have to employ here - rubbish, but that's what they say).

The VAT though is interesting - the EU laws for electronic product sales (downloadable software) specify that the VAT is payable in the country where the distribution server is located (e.q. from where you download). So if you go to Adobe UK site and try to buy any software there - they will charge you 19% VAT (as their distribution server is in Ireland). Why they could not set it up in the country with lowest VAT or even outside EU (like downloads from US) - I have no idea.

A year ago I bought LR2 (full retail) and went through all those options. In the end, using my friend's help (living in Canada) I got it much cheaper from there with all the taxes and PayPal transfer fees applied (to send my friend money as he paid by his CC) than buying it here. The difference was somewhere in a region of 60 quid.

RE the VAT, setting it up outside the EU wouldn't work. Once they go over the compulsory registration threshold in the UK (c. £70k), they'd then have to register for UK VAT. They're probably based in Ireland as the 12.5% tax rate on corporate tax profits more than outweighs for them the marginal VAT difference. There is somewhere in the EU a small body of islands (not the usual havens of Channel Islands/ Isle of Man/Gib etc) that does have a 12% VAT rate, but since Adobe would need to actually locate servers/staff there, they might have decided that it wasn't worth it on a quality of service basis. I'm a tax partner in a law firm during the day, hence the above :)

Interesting - thanks. So what if they won't setup any servers in EU at all? What if they will sell downloads directly from US location? What are the taxes payable then and why can't they do it?
