As a husband whose wife knows nothing about photography. I always appreciate the surprise of being able to choose my own kit. A 'voucher' with a photo of the sort of thing I'm after, but I always do the purchasing.

Sorry I can't help on that specific lighting kit.

You'll find plenty of posts on this kit in the lighting forum.

FWIW, I agree with Steven - best if he makes his own choice.

Just a thought... if you could find a way for ^ Garry ^ to get a very simple Lencarta starter kit to you in time for Christmas then you couldn't go very wrong. Even just a single head, softbox, stand and cable would be something to open on Christmas day and start playing (it's best to start learning with one head anyway). Hubby could then add to it as he wishes... he wouldn't even be particularly tied in to Lencarta as their modifiers fit Bowens heads or other compatible systems.

Like I say... just a thought :)

what a lovely thought

it is tricky though
the cheap ebay kits have tempted me but getting them in time for xmas is tricky
also when you have them, you might be have lots of substandard kit which will last not as long as decent equipment
200quid for all that is great
typically a smaller 2 light setup is £300 from lencarta for example with no gels or triggers.
so the cost difference has to come from somewhere.
if you do want a gift for on the day, what about this sort of thing and a studio lighting course if he's not done one.
they're about 70-120 quid depending upon the content and lots of fun for a keen photographer

i could get the ebay one i was looking at as it is only up the road 15 miles from my addie so it was doable Just !!

but when you first start off you dont just buy the top of the range camera do ? you start with one and work your way up

If it's doable, I'd say do it! It's a good place to start and your hubby will be able to test out his ideas and the equipment will NOT hold him back for a good long while.

No, it's not the best kit out there, but not so much because it doesn't make or shape light as well as other equipment. More that it's simply not tough, robust equipment. If you had the time and limitless money available, I'd say go for Lencarta equipment because it seems unsurpassed with regard to bang (or flash?) for your buck. But if the mission is to give your hubby a beaming smile on Christmas morning, I can't imagine how you could go wrong with the kit you're considering. :)

And a personal recommendation (from my other half).. treat yourself to a really nice cushion and a little electric fan.. I suspect you'll be sitting under some hot modelling lights 'til the wee hours of Boxing Day! :D
