Hi, Im a first year photography student.

I'm doing some test shoots with a model on Wednesday and Im not getting the effects I want. I understand the basics of which light to use etc but was hoping a pro could have a look at these photos Ive trying to replicate and tell me what lighting set-up (position, attachment etc) would be best. Obv I know I wont get to the standards of these photos but if I could just get the basics it would be great.

The kit I have to use: 2x Lencarta SmartFlash 200W, 2x small softboxes, 1x beauty dish (with removable defuser), 1x snoot (with removable honeycomb), some reflectors, Light meter too.

Thanks. Will be a big help. I really want to get the lighting setup straight in my head.

I'd suggest some training! These are all very different and range from what looks like natural light to a multi light set up

What he said. The first 3 are window light.
Thats the easiest to start with. You can adjust angle partially close curtains and control shadows with reflectors and black flags.

Numbers 1, 2 & 3 are window light, number 1 can also easily be achieved with a softbox in rimlighting position. No. 2 may or may not also have involved a reflector.

No.3 is a fresnel spot.

No. 4 is probably a fresnel spot or a beauty dish, but could also be a softbox. There may or may not be more than 1 light there.

No. 5 as above, and is also heavily retouched.

I'm sure that this doesn't help you much, what will help you is an understanding of light. I will be covering all of these simple techniques on a training course this weekend. If you have the right models, a good range of equipment and an enquiring mind it's pretty easy to learn by trial and error, but most of us learn these things easier and more cheaply by going on the right kind of lighting course
