There's some fairly cheap 2 or 3 light setups on ebay that are suitable for home lighting. I'm sure they wouldn't last too long in a studio for everyday use, but for a small room at home that's only getting used occasionally I'm sure they'd be fine. They are available from around £130-150 for the whole lot.
I'm sure someone will be along soon with more experience to shoot me down in flames, and fair enough if they do, IMO though I'd rather not spend megabucks unless I was using it for a business.
 
For portraits at home you could use a Nikon Speedlight fired thru a white umbrella you can pick up the speedlights and umbrella and remote triggers quite cheap on ebay this is what i have used in the past also means you have the speedlight for other uses when not in the house
 
I recently acquired a couple of stands and shoot through brollies. I use a Nikon sb900 (overkill for me methinks) and a Nissan di622 mkII.

Just been playing around with them over the last few days trying to learn!
