Hello all,

I seem to remember someone on here was selling lightbox or tents, I can't seem to find the thread, does anyone have it bookmarked?

There seem to be some on eBay with 4 different coloured backgrounds that fold away, these are less than £15 and was wondering if they are decent for the money? If not, which should I be looking at?

Cheers..

Great pic of the Wii... How did you light it? I was thinking of having lamps either side of the tent and my 580mk2 on the camera in front. Do you think this would work?

May be worthwhile looking into light tables too, especially if you are looking for clean backgrounds.

I got a tent off fleabay, whilst it was ok and nothing wrong with it I ended up binning it and just kept the inserts.

I'm no expert on product photography but I'd say just get some backdrop material and forget the tent.

I bought one of those light tents that you are talking about.
Seems to be great. The only thing is, you need to iron the hell out of the coloured backgrounds when you get it and you have to be quite careful as the backgrounds are made from quite thin material that is easy to crease or bunch up.
It is also a bit of an art to fold the light tent flat again but there are excellent videos on YouTube that show how to do this.

Here are some examples for you:

This one here show the crease/crinkle in the background:

Interesting.

Is it worth getting a tent but then using some kind of thick card / mountboard as the background?

Does anyone have a picture of there own setup?

Will post photos of set up tomorrow if I get a chance,

Heres a couple from a still life or light table

I will never borrow your lighttent StuartH.
I would be scared of finding a snake in it! :D

I made my own from 15mm pipe + fittings a shower curtain and different
coloured sheets of card in a curve for backgrounds.

Works a treat, I'll post up a sample picture later (work thing going on unfortunately:thumbsdown:)

Here's the picture taken from the above setup

Its a bit dark but its supposed to be, I post up a lighter one later.

Very creative Lee. Proves you don't need to spend a fortune.

Does anyone here use a handheld light meter or grey card when using their light tent?

I have a 32" one from ebay.

I have used a flash meter to get the exposure right if I am using manual guns but with digital it's easy enough to guess and alter the settings from there.

I am interested to read about people ironing the backgrounds. They are a thin plastic sheet and I was scared of melting them rather than getting creases out. Does ironing actually work on them?

Hi Andy, yes ironing does help as long as you have the iron set to a low/medium temp.As I mentioned above I place a tea towel or similar over the background so the iron isnt in direct contact.I then just store them loosely folded in half. You could also wrap them round a cardboard tube to reduce creasing when not being used.

Fantastic replies all, lots to think about.

Jeeno - what card did you use for the background? Where did you get it from? Also, what lights did you use, they look expensive!

I was thinking of getting one of those cheap tents and then using card inside to eradicate the crease problem from the backgrounds.
