I experimented a while ago with light writing using glow sticks but I want to get something a bit brighter and longer lasting. I have looked at torches but not sure what's best, could do with any advice people have in this sort of thing
The old school method seems to be getting a bright torch, getting a tin of quality street, eating all the sweets and using the coloured wrappers to put around the end of the torch/light to make it different colours.
Failing that you can go out and buy different coloured led lights. Just make sure it doesnt have a direct beam, otherwise it will look funny everytime you aim it directly at the lens, something where the light is diffused slightly at the center.

"Gels are thin flexible sheets of polycarbonate or polyester. They are also known as colored gels or lighting gels they are used in light painting photography to produce specific colors when flashes or flashlights are shined through them. Gels come in hundreds of different colors. They can also be used to create lighting effects in front of the camera with reflected light. Gels can be expensive, a good place to start to build your gel collection is searching for Roscolux sample packs on ebay." Source is http://lightpaintingphotography.com/light-painting-tools/
Slightly more expensive and less fun than eating a box of quality street though
