Hi All

Busted one of my light stands yesterday. Blew over in the breeze. (i dodnt secure my bag at the bottom properly)The ones i use are only 10.99 from amazon, but was wondering whether there is anything you recommend. Need to be strong enough to support a westcott rapid box or a westcott halo, but portable.

Also need a decent bag to take 2 stands plus the westcott modifiers. Any recommendations?

Thanks
Greg

For stands and brolly-type modifiers that collapse down into a stick-shape - you can't really beat a hockey bag for carrying them. Should only cost you a tenner or so from a sports shop. They have a decent shoulder strap for carrying and are built to take the weight of hockey sticks, so "rugged" is generally an apt term to describe their build.

Nice one. Didn't think of that. Was looking for camera manufacturers bags but it doesn't have to be branded or anything. Will check out on amazon for hockey bags.

Cheers

Looks about right - just double-check the height against the length of the stowed modifiers.

Dude - whatever you buy, get some sandbags!

I use Calumet stands and drag 'em around in a Kata Palms case which has room for brollies, boxes and a set of Quadras.

Cheers lyope.

Those Kata bags look great, but way to pricey for what im after. And im trying to minimise kit so i can be mobile. I picked up a used addidas hockey kit bag for £12. Will fit 2 stands, umbrellas and modifiers and possibky my tripod too. Sturdy too although not padded, but i could mod it if need be.

I thought about sandbags, but the permanent weight that i would carry would drive me nuts so its a catch 22 really. I bought some bungees to strap the stands down to my bags where possible. on soft ground / woodland etc i use some decent camping pegs.

cheers again.

I suppose if you've got time to be pegging stands down, that would work very well. But I work mainly in the urban jungle and I like to drag my stands here and there as I adjust the light. I do have karabiners and little loops of paracord on most of my bags so I can use them as ballast, but sometimes (like when you've got a boom arm that needs a counterweight) you can't beat a good, old-fashioned sandbag.

Keep your eye on eBay for Kata and Portabrace kit. It's pricy new, but you can sometimes have it for a song second hand and when it's really beaten-up cosmetically, that sort of gear still Just Works.
