Evening All,

I don't know whether I have totally lost the plot or just going mad.

When shooting in Av or Tv mode, my Light Meter does not move at all, it just stays in the centre. Is this meant to happen? I just noticed it today.

The meter does move however in Manual mode, which I have been using.

Can someone explain why the meter does not move in Av or Tv modes, or whether its meant to?

Please help,

Thanks

its meant to set the exposure correctly for you in either aperture or shutter priority ,and thats what it thinks its doing ,so the pointer / needle stays in the middle

In auto modes, such as Tv, Av and P, the central position of the meter means you have no exposure compensation set. It only moves from centre if you set exposure compensation.

or set to manual, then you have to put it in the middle, or just either side to suit you.

In Av or TV, or P, the needle will only shift from the middle position if the camera is unable to centre it.

For example, in Av and very bright light, with high ISO and low f/number, you might need a shutter speed faster than the camera can achieve, so it will shift towards over-exposure. The shutter speed will also flash, warning that you need to do something else (like reduce the ISO or raise the f/number).

The only other time, as mentioned, is if you have exposure compensation applied, when the meter needle will move to indicate that you're made an adjustment that is more or less than the camera thinks it should be.
