My Gemini Pro 1,000 does a MASSIVE pop at the highest setting. Turn it down by even a tiny amount and it's almost silent. Have you ramped the power up?

Gary.

Just been doing some more black b/g shots had the light turned right down. But made no difference...!!

Thanks mod / admin people for moving this...

if the crack doesn't change volume with the power output, stand well back.

I've had some very dramatic flash fires before but oddly never expensive to fix

As Gary said really. I use Profoto Pro7 heads quite a lot at the moment. When I test fired one for the first time at full wack I almost dropped the head I was holding it was so loud  But turned down a click it was sooo much less dramatic.

Are there any sparks?

What kind of popping noise? Could be a cap on the way out.....

It makes no difference what power the lights on to the Crack / poping noise ..

Some where vey loud as if it was about to go titsup. But most where just annoying I have taken it down now and put the other up.. Works a treat " Although I did notice the light seemed alot brighter,,,?"

Sounds like a cap going bad to me.....

Bring them with you and I'll have a look if you like. If it needs a new one and we can get hold of it I can replace it for you.

It could be a capacitor but it's more likely to be a poor contact, probably involving the non-removable flash tube.

Whatever it is, I advise against using it until it's been diagnosed at least, otherwise you could end up with an expensive and potentially dangerous failure.
And, because of the very high voltages involved, it's much safer to leave it to a specialist repairer

It may or may not be relevant, but is this one of the 'old' or 'new' Courtenay lights?
By new, I mean one of the last ones they produced before they ceased trading in (I think) 2000, with a much more modern look and lots of snazzy controls.

There's a story that their bankrupt stock was involved in a warehouse fire and that a lot of the flash heads were water damaged, but were sold anyway, and many of them later went BANG

Same here. A capacitor is on the way out if yer lights saying 'crack' as opposed to 'pop', or as Garry has mentioned a bad contact.

A friend of mine had a bad contact on his Elinchrom Quadra, = bye bye A head.

No matter how loud a 'pop' is on the highest power, it's highly distinguishable from a 'crack'. 'Crack's' are bad m'kay.
