light/glare issues

hi, im fairly new to the world of photography, and im having a few issues with excessive light/glare on some of my shots.

i generally use my camrea for taking shots of motorcycle racing, but some of my photos are spoiled by the sun glaring off bodywork and helmets. is there a way to cut some of the glare out?

i use a cannon Eos 450D with a sigma 70-300mm lens

Circular polariser perhaps, though I'm no expert on motorsport??

a lens hood may help with some of it:shrug:

If it is reflections, then a polariser will help.
If it is glare from pointing into the sun, then a hood will help
