I'm going to attempt this to push myself into using my camera properly. I'm going to use the theme each week but also try to challenge myself to use a different setting or technique as often as possible as well.

Well best of luck on your 52 adventure

Good luck and have fun..;)

Accommodation

Not in my comfort zone for this one. Have struggled all week to get a good shot but failed miserably so I'm affraid this is my crappy effort! :gag: Composition is appalling as I had my son pulling at me the whole time so I missed the bottom off the candle sconce. Please feel free to rip it appart!

This is a great idea. The view into the room through the mirror really draws the eye.
You've done well to get this shot with a little one distracting you. I have enough trouble keeping my camera straight on my own :)

I feel it would have helped to have one of the candle images in focus.

Looking forward to seeing no. 2 in your 52.

Cheers Patrick

Thanks Patrick. I'm going to make sure I'm on my own taking shots this week so I might come up with something passable!!!

Really good idea this and the composition is almost there.

Well done

Love the concept, I agree the candle takes something away from the final result though. look forward to seeing the next 51.

Thanks for the encouragement. Unfortunately the candle holder was an integral part of the mirror and would have looked very odd without the candle so I was stuck with it.

Thats a really great idea for the theme. The candle is slightly distracting to the shot but overall i like it :)

Thanks for all the replies! I may have to try a reshoot next time I'm down at the in-laws.

Ok a day late but have a poorly little boy at the moment so everything is late at the mo. :'(

I tried various things but this is the one I was happiest with. I like the composition and the texture on the inside of the bag but the lighting is a bit funny (best I could do without lights) and I definately need to buy myself a remote as I'm just not getting it crisp enough.

Hi Lesley,

Your week one confuses me!
As I understand DOF, you focus on one point in the frame that is a distance from the lens and (subject to lens and F# etc) things in the foreground and background are OOF. So, if you focused on the mirror and the image it produced, why is the mirror image of the candle OOF?
Dispite this, I think the shot works and it's a great take on the week 1 theme.

As for sharpness, can I recommend you use the cameras self timer until you get a remote. My bridge camera wont support a remote or cable release, so I set the shot and then apply the 2 or 10 second timer delay to let the tripod etc settle.

The problem there is that he didn't focus on the mirror - as shown by the fact that the edge of the mirror is OOF. This is where we get into the physics of light, and the way things work isn't obvious at first.

When it comes to focus of objects in mirrors, you have to treat the mirror as a window with a reversed copy of everything behind it. In this case, imagine that the camera is 1ft from the mirror, the candle is 6in from the camera, and the piano is 10ft behind the camera. The camera is actually focussed at a "virtual point" 12ft in front of us - the light from the piano has travelled 10ft past the camera, another 1ft to the mirror, and then the 1ft back from the mirror to the camera.

It's a complex topic and until you get your head around it, a very confusing one.

But anyway, back from the threadjacking... :bonk:

Interesting shot for "new" - the different textures play quite well together and it's a well composed shot. To have done that with only available light and a sick kid, hats off to you!
Back to schedule and full health next week, I hope!
