I have a canon 550d and various lenses, but i really want a good quality not to expensive 100mm- 400mm for wildlife photos. I,ve read some articles on sigma and tamron lenses , but i have only used canon lenses. Any views or advice welcome

There have been recent discussions here in the last few days on the sigma 150-500.

Read some reviews just wanted to hear what some people thought or any other advice on zoom lenses

I'm a Nikon shooter and I traded in my Siggy 150-500 OS against a Nikkor 300/4.

I found the Siggy soft at the long end and lacking a little in contrast. OMMV.

Hi John and welcome to the site. I've got the Canon 100-400 L and the Sigma 150-500 OS and to be honest there's not that much difference in the IQ at their respective long ends. I think the Canon just edges it on IQ but the Sigma wins on stability. I've managed handheld shots at 1/60 regularly and even 1/30 on occasions. I've used the 100-400 on a 550D (my first dslr and now the wife's) to great effect for wildlife and airshows and was my first L zoom. They both need fairly good light to get the best out of them but both have good AF times and both will give you excellent results. The Sigma is available from Panamoz.com (where I got mine) for just under £600 new with a 3 year warranty and well worth getting. Hope this helps.

not got that specific sigma, but have the 120-400. A very nice lens. Just looking now at the 150-500mm and surprised at the differences in prices according to the camera intended for.

Depends on your budget?

Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 OS £500-600
Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 OS £600-700
Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 IS £1100-1200
Sigma 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 OS £1100-1200

The wildlife crowd like the 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 think its a better lens than either of the other 2 sigma's, the canon loses out on IS, but that's because the lens is 11 years old, 1st gen, but its still a good lens if you find a good copy. Personally, to get the best from these lenses you'll still need to step them down an f-stop or so, light then becomes a factor with your camera settings to achieve the right apertures and shutter speeds. They ain't fast lenses
