Lenses for Skomer

Having a few spare batteries would be useful rather than relying on just one. If I remember correctly are two double power sockets powered by solar panels so there is power, but there’s usually a queue of chargers. If everyone plays nicely it should fine. As you’re in the photography tour group it should be ok as you’d know most of the photographers who will be charging batteries. I’d say taking a jackery is a bit overkill as there should be plenty of solar. Don’t forget everything has to be carried off the boat and up the steps and back again. There’s a tractor that can take bags to the accommodation but if that’s not working then you have to carry it all yourself to the accommodation in the centre of the island. You’ll have clothes, food and photography kit so will have quite a bit to carry anyway.

I’ve never gone in an organised photography group trip as I’ve always booked our own stays with friends. Days are very long in June as sunrise is around 4am and sunset 10pm. We prioritised early morning (sunrise) and evening (sunset) outings. We mainly went out once the day trippers had gone home. Light in the day time can be a bit harsh if it’s a bright day. The best bit of staying on the island is that you can go out in the best light which you can’t do as a day tripper.

Godod shout, I will be investing in a few, good point about taking gear up and down the steps, I struggle enough with normal steps so this will be a killer. So maybe it's best to just take a couple of high powered powerbanks and multipul charged batteries. When it comes to clothes, I travel light. If I can't fit it in my photography bag then it wont be coming! I have a lowapro AW45, so plenty of room - jumper and jacket will be carried seperately though.

That's a good shout to be honest, The main reason to go on an organised trip was to develop my skills as I feel I have ground to a hault with my photography and want to get better but dont know how, if that makes sense?. It sounds like I'll have plenty of time to record some video there too, because I want to add to the millions of Skomer youtube videos. ha.

The boat is unloaded and loaded on Skomer by forming a human chain which makes it easier but it still need to be carried from the campsite long stay parking area for overnight stayers to the harbour. That's around half a mile walk away. several small bags are easier to carry off the boat than one large bag. The other over nighters will thank you for not taking a large bag!

That's a good shout. Maybe I will leave the jackery in the car (going to camp at the local campsite if there's room, if not I will be parking on the street and sleeping in the car!). I am going to slim down my camera bag, looking at a smaller one from Amazon anyways so that should be helpful and a small bag of clothes, sleeping bag, camping pillow, and I have a bunch of that freeze dried camping food in pouches. :)

I am also going this year, booked the stay myself in October 2022 :) but they sell out very fast. Also, they still have the bookings from the Covid period pre-booked this year. So it is allocated to them first before they opened up to members, then the general.

Awesome! Glad you were able to get a space, when are you going?. and yeah, I read that. I am lucky although dead expensive I have found a chap who has a space free in June, so managed to get onto that. Phew! I am looking forward to evening puffin shots, as long as the weather holds out. i'll be super annoyed if I can't. Already had 2022's holiday cancelled as I was meant to have gone back to Chernobyl, hopefully 2023 won't be a failure! ha.

Beginning of June, hopefully, the flowers are blooming. The last time I was there, there aren't any flowers around in early May, probably too early in the year.

The nearest campsite is one of the best I have ever been to ; the view is terrific - across to the St Davids peninsula and off to sea - and is (or was) reasonably priced. And that is where you leave the car when leaving for the islands. It's an easy walk down the road or along the coast path to the embarkation point. I'm sure you'll love your visit to Skomer.

Amazing, I am off on the 13-15, so fingers crossed too - excuse to get out the macro and have a bit of fun with that. Really looking forward to it, hope you have the best time too.

Awesome, I have just emailed them - I am far too mellenial to pick up the phone. But that sounds fantastic, it's £12 a night camping and then just clarifying the cost of parking over the few days which I think is £24 - which isn't too bad as in Brighton that's like 4 hours of parking (feels like it anyways!). I am so excited, I am overthinking it massively as any good person does, trying to peace the holiday together. :) Just got to get everything now, so buying it all over the next few months.
As well as getting out and practicing photography again!
