Hi all,
I have a Canon 7D, currently have a 50mm f/1.8, a Tamron 70-300, and a Canon 24-135mm.

I dont use the Tamron anymore, as the quality that comes out of it is just poor to what can come out, only have it as it was fine on my older camera! I'm hoping to upgrade that to the 70-200 L f/4.0 at the start of next year.
I was just wondering if people have any recommendations for other good lenses that will bring out the quality of the camera much more and ones I should think about buying etc?
My main subject is dogs/animals. Fast moving as well because I take pictures of dog sports too!

Thanks :D

On a 7D I'd put 17-55IS or 15-85IS plus 70-200 f2.8IS II (but that's megabucks). You'll love the 70-200F4L...

Look at the lower priced L series lenses such as the 17-40 F4L and 24-105 F4L, you will love the 70-200 F4L, I love mine!

17-55 and 70-200L, either f2.8 or 4, with or without IS depending on what you need! I would recommend hiring or trying out at the very least to make sure you get the right lens for you. The 24-xxx L lenses are great but if you shoot wide at all 24 on a 1.6 crop is not wide at all...

 +1 for the 17-55 f2.8 and the 70-200 L. I agree with Jim re. the 24-xxx lenses they are good but you would get annoyed at the short end very quickly on a crop sensor body. The 17-55 f2.8 over the 17-40 any day as well its designed specifically for the crop sensor bodies and just works great.

Without knowing what the Op likes to shoot, I think ruling out the 24-105 F4L is a bit of a gamble, especially for the money you can get them for used. Its probably the best range for a walk-about lens, unless the OP likes to shoot landscapes all the time, then yes, the 24mm wouldnt be wide enough

I agree, I have the 24-105L on my 7D and love it, great lens, but depends what you shoot mainly, what you gain at the wide end on the 17-55 you lose much more on reach.

Pretty much just to echo everything else that has been said here.

17-55 if you like the wider walk around or 24-105 if you would like a slightly longer walk around then combine with any one of the 70-200mm L lenses and that's about it. No real need for crazy wide with shooting dogs/animals but possibly extra reach might be needed in which case a 2nd hand Sigma 100-300mm f4 is a stunning piece of kit, very sharp even with a 1.4x TC on giving 420mm a f5.6, also the AF is quick. I'm not totally sure why they stopped making it as it was a great lens.

You can get the best of both worlds with the 15-85 IS. Cracking, cracking lens and cheaper than the other options...

It's very true, I just don't like shooting with variable aperture lenses as you can't set manual options with anything wider than the widest aperture at the long end of the lens (hmmmm, did that make sense LOL?) I guess that is just a personal thing and agree that as a lens it is very strong.

Yes :D. I can see where you're coming from, but I tend to shoot in aperture mode and around F/8 for most of my photos so... Ms arad85 (who uses the 7D far more than I do) just has it set in P and centre focus point  ...

did you like the focal length of the tamron was it just the quality you wernt happy with?
if you like 70-300 get the canon L version, AF is really fast .

I use a 70-200 f4 L non IS and a 24-105 f4 L which was the kit lens for my 5D2. Both lenses are outstanding on the 7D. IQ on the 70-200 is absolutely out of this world, easy enough to carry weightwise and fast enough for most things.
I used the 70-200 on my 5D2 yesterday for the first time and, considering people think the AF is slow, was capturing birds in flight, squirrels and other wildlife and am really happy with the results.

Thanks everyone! Will give them a really good think over.
Chris-b, I really liked the focal length, but wishing to upgrade pretty soon, I'll have the money for the 70-200 quicker then for the 70-300! I mainly used the extra bit for shooting my own dogs as they run far and fast, whereas client photoshoots I can managed pretty well with 200. Going to give it all a good think though as it might be better in the long run to wait for the 70-300 anyway! :D

Agreed +1

The 15-85mm is well worth looking into.

Can only recommend what I have actually used, so my choice would be 17-55mm and 70-200mm f/4 IS

Have both myself with a 7D and work very nicely, also got a 1.4 TC for that bit extra length

One other to consider is the Tamron 17-50mm VC, know many people say get the non VC version, but the one my daughter has is excellent. Would never know from the photos that its half the price of the Canon and focusses very quickly too.
