Debating whether to go FF and was wondering what members thought regarding the best lenses for a walkaround. I already have a 50 1.8, a 100L 2.8 and a 100-400L 4.0-5.6 for my 7D.I mainly shoot aircraft and macro but do shoot everything inbetween. I was thinking a 17-40L f4, and 1 other but dont know what. Want to cover from the 40 to around 135 and have a budget of £500-600. Any ideas ?

Hi Stuart

I know of a 28-135 IS USM lens that fits comfortably within your budget, i think it's F3.5 - 5.6 and is supposedly very sharp. Might be worth giving some thought...

24-105?

Thanks for the quick replies, just seen an ad for a 5D2 and 24-105L 4.0 for just under £2100. As i'm not really into landscapes or WA I think the 24-105 might be enough.

just seen the advert, just gotta get the money and persuade the wife.

On HDEW they are 2025 for the 5D MKII + 24-105 F4L

HDEW?

Got my 24-105mm and am so happy with it that I have started selling quite a few of my other lenses that i know I won't use them. I rarely shoot wide open or need the f/2.8 so the siggy 24-70mm is already up for sale. All because i am happy with the 24-105mm.

On FF I think its a great lens.

Think it'd have to be the 24-105 L f4.0 as this would give me the range I need and would compliment my 100-400 L nicely. I'm getting an MP-E65 for christmas so I may think about swapping my 100 L 2.8 macro for something in the future. Like I said, will just have to persuade the wife now.

I am not exactly sure on this but I think the MP-E65 is a unique lens and doesn't exactly replace the 100mm Macro.
Anyone else please feel free to prove me wrong :)

I just got a 5D MII + 24-105 off Calumet....

Very pleased with the 24-105, very sharp.....

24-105mm is a cracking lens. Can't fault it. The stabilisation is very useful.

Use the 50.... ;)

Will you be OK with full frame for aircraft? the 7Ds 1.6x makes your 400 a 600ish, might need to budget for a teleconverter when you go to a 5d..

The 24-105L is a great general purpose walkabout lens, its on my 5d mark II a large proportion of the time. If it was me I'd hang on to my 100L apart from being an excellent macro lens I find it makes a great portrait lens on the 5d:)

:thumbs::thumbs: what he said

I bought a 24-105mm lens a couple of months ago for my 5D MkII.

It has hardly been off the 5D and produces superb pictures. A great walk about lens.

You will not be disappointed.

Thanks for all your answers guys, for those advising me to hang onto the 100L dont worry, I wont be doing anything with it til I get the results from the MPE that I want. Even then I'd only let it go if I found something I really wanted.
As for the 24-105L on a 5D Mkii, I think that might be the one. I've let the wife have my 550D and my EFS 18-55 IS 2 and my 55-250 IS and she's letting me have my 5D and 24-105L, and I can still borrow her lenses for my 7D whenever I want. Yippee!!

Tell me more about this lens please :)
Ever since I moved to the 5D MKII I have bee in love with lenses that bring the best out of it.

I just got one, they are pretty hard to find!! It's a light but beautifully made MF lens, nice to look at, with great IQ and easy to MF- that's my initial assessment anyway! Go and look a some reviews online,

I can't find any negatives at the moment - bokeh could be better in certain situations I guess but its a 40mm lens so....
