I have asked about this in the equipment section but I thought you guys might have better knowledge as it's specifically sports related, not sure if I'm allowed to post about the same thing in 2 sections? Anyway.....

I currently have a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO DG HSM lens in great condition, not sure of the date of production. I use it for shooting sports and I have no massive complaints, although sometimes it's a little slow to focus, and the zoom is a little bit to hard to move to zoom in and out very quickly as I often need to do in football matches. It is pretty sharp, nothing to complain too much about again. I have used a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 (can't remember the exact lens) and it just felt a bit more responsive, faster to focus, quicker to zoom in and out and a little bit sharper in general.

So I'm thinking about selling the Sigma and buying a second hand Canon. As it's mostly for sport, I'm not fussed about IS so I'm looking at a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L USM lens dated 2010.

Any advice? Would you see this as an upgrade or is it more of a side step?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Massive upgrade, but there are other options if you dont want the expense of the "L" red ring

Some online reviews and tests show the Tamron VC version to be faster and sharper than the Canon MKII L IS

If it's not from someone dodgy and works well then buy it or send it my way.

Sorry guys it was over here in Australia. Genuine though, f2.8. Some random things go really cheap on Australian eBay. I guess not as much demand for stuff and nobody wants to ship internationally.

I missed out I that lens, I didn't let the guy know quick enough and he sold to someone else. They regularly sell in great condition for a around $900 though which is just over £500. Gonna keep an eye out for the IS version too.
