I've recently started to enjoy macro photography and have been amazed with how well the G16 has performed, I can focus to with 1cm of the scene and some of the photos I've been really pleased with, however, I don't seem to be getting anywhere near the quality with my canon 40d and sigma 17-70 lens. Obviously there is much better control on the SLR as the manual focusing on the G16 is a bit slow and fiddly. Could anyone give me some advice to where I might be going wrong. I don't want to go and buy a macro prime lens if the 40d can't match the G16 and I'm still going to get inferior results.

Many thanks

Have you got any extension tubes? They turn any lens into a macro lens (at the cost of a number of aperture stop). Your sigma at 70mm + macro tubes will give you decent results. I assume you are using a tripod and shutter release?

Thanks for replying, I think I do have some tubes somewhere I will give them a go. I am using the tripod and shutter release although the G16 results were pretty good hand held.

To be honest, you need a macro lens!

The G16 has an advantage in some ways because because the smaller sensor allows for a lens design that alows closer focussing and also has greater depth of field than would be available using APS-C or full frame at a given aperture. Extension tubes will certainly let you get closer, but DoF will still be narrower than you get with your compact.
