Looking for any suggestions/ideas!

I usually lug my SLR around whenever I'm going anywhere that might have the smallest opportunity for a shot to be had. I don't really stick to one thing so really a bit of everything! (not useful info I know!)

This was OK when I had a 400D and a nifty fifty but my line up has changed a bit and suddenly seem to be lugging and kilograms of kit!

Which was as follows:

5D MkII (big and heavy)
50mm F1.8 II (can't fault the nifty fifty really for the price!)
17 - 40L (not too big or heavy but I find it not wide enough to be "fun")
24 - 70L (big and heavy)
Sigma 70 - 300 (borrowed after my Tamron broke!)

My thoughts were....

I've ordered up an EOS M and an EF Converter which will be nice and compact and portable and takes advantage of my existing lenses.

I've also ordered the following:
50mm F1.4
70 - 200 F2.8L II

I was thinking:
swap the 17-40 for a 16 - 35 F2.8L

I was thinking of either swapping the 24 - 70 for:
- the new 24 - 70L II (lighter and slightly smaller but twice the price)
- 24 - 105 (cheaper, lighter, smaller but slower)
- Nothing, the 50mm F1.4 covers the gap between wide and small?

As for the body, possibly swapping the 5D MkII for the 6D (every so slightly smaller and lighter) Anyone done this? Would it be a step backwards?

If you don't want big and heavy, why get the 70-200?

I just got a Fuji XE1 and 18-55 to save lugging a 5D and lenses about. Will still use it for specific uses, but really enjoying the smaller and lighter outfit

I would have a look through your favourite shots from the last 12 months and see which lengths and lenses you've used most - be a shame to sell what turned out to be a favourite! Not sure the 16-35 will add much to what the 17-40 offers; if you want to go wide, how about a Sigma 12-24? At £400 (2nd hand), it would be cheaper than swapping to the 1 stop faster wide angle zoom.

Ross,

I have the 24-70 2.8L MkII and it is a cracking lens BUT it isn't that small physically. I use a 1Dx and 6D combo and funnily enough the 24-70 goes on the 6D. It is good on that but still a fair lump. Why not try a days rental and see what you think before splashing out although if you do splash out on the MkII I don't think you'll regret it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll have a look into the wide angle sigma, I'd half thought about the new Canon fisheye but thought it maybe a little too specalised.

I was under the impression the 24- 70 II was of plastic construction and slightly smaller than the old one, I may rent/borrow one. What are you thoughts on the 6D vs 5d MKII?

Can't comment on the 5D MkII as never tried one. Only use the 1DX and 6D myself.

Use the 6 together with the 1 and when out with both put the lighter lenses on the 6. Happy with both cameras but they are poles apart.

Could you not get a MkIII rather than a II?. The 6D has a metal/plastic body. Plastic because of the built in Wi-Fi which I don't tend to use as it really drains the batteries.

It's got good features but if I could afford it I'd sooner have two 1Dx's or the Dx I have and a 5 MkIII but hey ho.

Have a look on Canons site it will give you all the specs there. If there's anything else get back to me. Oh almost forgot. The 24-70 has some plastic but is solid otherwise. Don't know if it's lighter as again, never had the MkI

Already pulled the trigger on the Canon EOS M and Sigma DP would require a whole new lens lineup.

nope, all in one units, with lens (and micro lens too) tailored to the sensor, so they are very very good :)
rx1 and ricoh gx? have a similer thing, results better than you expect
ofcourse they arent as sharp as canon, because they are sharper :)
