Im going to buy a canon 450D when it comes to the uk. I travel a bit and i'm going on safari in africa soon.

Basically Im looking to buy a mid range zoom lens which has excellent picture quality when its at the end of its focal range, but as i'm on the move i want it to be as small as possible (compact)

Is it worth sticking to canon or are the third party lenses as good for the budget conscious buyer? Any suggestions?

Thanks Mark

I had Sigma lenses on my 400D, and was very happy with the results they gave me on my travels in Asia.
And even if I now have Canon lenses, I would say that for budget it will be OK to get third party lenses as well.

You could of course splash on the Canon 100-400 F4 and would not have to 'upgrade' for a long while..

Don't forget the extra suitcase required to carry the lens though ;)

The Canon 70-300 IS is a good "all round" telephoto zoom, covering quite a good range. The Image Stabiliser will help when hand holding, especially from within a vehicle. Not cheap at just over £300, but worth it.

It can get a little soft at the long end, but gives better than average results. If you want quality, the Canon 70-200 L is the glass you should be looking at, but may not be able to pay for your holiday if you choose that option
