I have been looking to buy a lens wrench and lens repair tool ( the rubber ones that undo the mount around the lens if there are no holes for a lens wrench).
Why on earth are the rubber tools so expensive??? It is just a bit of rubber....I don't understand how they can justify the cost.

Blu Tack works well on the bottom of a glass or jar too apparently (I've not tried it, but know a man who has/does).

And as far as the wrench goes (if it's the sort I'm thinking of), a good pair of vernier calipers will work - they have hardened tips, whilst the lens rings are most likely of softer stuff. Protect the glass!

A pair of vernier calipers as a wrench? That's a stab in the heart to a precision engineer!

A visit to an autojumble or similar will almost certainly find a box of knackered old tools and there may well be a set of vernier calipers in there. Grind/file the tips off the sharper bit and that might do the job.

Sorry David. I'll get out the Elastoplast ...

But it doesn't seem to hurt them, since they are harder than the material being addressed, and the likely turning forces aren't great.

The lens wrench is cheap enough - about £15.....it is the rubber mount removers that are ridiculously expensive at about 50 to 60 quid.
