I am looking for somebody to tell and explain what the term "STOPPING DOWN" means and does in a lens.

I hear it mentioned alot and that i have 2 VR lenses even more so.

Thanks

It means selecting a smaller aperture (larger f number) in order to bring more of the picture into focus (or allow a slower shutter speed to be used).

Hi, it means reducing the aperture, ie going from say f 4 to a lower aperture, ie 5.6 or greater. The larger the number, the smaller the aperture.

It means shooting at anything other than the widest aperture.

ie - shooting an f/2.8 lens at f/4+ etc.

Lens are usually sharper around f/8-11 compared to 'wide open' Also you might want a bit more depth of field. So if you have enough light and the DoF produced is acceptable, you should shoot f/8 as often as possible.

Ah right i see i will give this a try. Does that work on all situations?
