Was just wondering what other people use to protect theirlenses when they arent in use? The pouches provided (by Sigma etc) are just too bulky for storage when in my bag: I am currently using 'clothes' that were given away by AP a couple of years ago - these are ok for smaller lenses but not for anything above a 70-300mm.

Any good suggestions?

except the 70-200 and 300 both have their soft bags on in the camera bag.

protect from what? lens hood does it all.

The main thing is dryness - and make sure your lenses are dry before putting away, even if they are weather sealed! I keep a few sachets of silica gel in the bag, culled from the packaging of various electrical goods.

Edit: I always use lens-protecting filters as I prefer not to be wiping the front of my lens too often, wiping is often necessary when it's raining and windy! The lens hood provides the best mechanical protection. I always do various checks with a new lens to ensure that the filter I'm using doesn't degrade the image (checking sharpness, bokeh, flare) and also to ensure I haven't got a duff filter.

those sachets are next to useless pretty much after a few mins. better off putting some rice in with them (not loose obviously) and renewing it every week.

They work for quite a while providing you aren't putting damp things away. The crystals turn a brownish colour when they are exhausted - they will work a lot longer than a few minutes! Try dropping one in water and see how much water they absorb to see what I mean.

I'm thinking more about scuffs and scratches to the lens body whilst in the bag.

Thats what the different dividers are for, you separate everything from everything else so there is no risk of scratches.

buy some soft felt pouches from 7DayShop - about £8

Lens caps when in a bag.
Filter and lens hood when in use.
