Hi this is my first post on this forum, but I have been an avid reader for a while. I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on why some lenses ie. Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM has increased in price by upwards of 600 pounds in the last 6 months?
Please forgive me if this topic has already discussed.

Matt

Are you sure your not looking at the non-IS version and the IS version? I haven't followed the prices but that sounds a bit to much of a price increase to me...

Have a look here for the Mark I.

Doesnt show £600 but there certainly has been an increase

I think you are comparing the mark II price to the mark I price possibly. The mark II has only just been released.

Biggest cost increase has been the falling pound, as I have noticed the same shift certainly on certain lenses, 70-200 being one

I bought the 70-200 f2.8L IS lens at around £1000GP and it went up to over £1,600GBP! Credit crunch, weak UK pound against the japanese Yen all meant the prices took a HUGE hike!

Not just Canon prices though.

The price went up but more than 6 months ago.

Ah, some questions on my specialist subject.

Correct.

I didn't think the MkII had been out for 6 months yet.

Correct. That's why there seems to have been a price hike compared to six months ago.

October 2009 = Mk I lens = £1400ish
April 2010 = Mk II lens = £2000+

Have a look here for the Mark I.

Doesnt show £600 but there certainly has been an increase

The price of the Mk I lens has been going up recently because stocks are running low. It's a shame that this is happening before the price of the Mk II les has come down to sensible levels, though.

That was in February 2009.

So am I right to think that now the MKII is out that the MKI will be no longer available when current stocks finish selling?

It's not just lenses that have been hit. A lot of bicycle equipment comes from Japan and this has also had a serious price hike, with some components seeing over 50% increase - eg I bought an XT Chainset for £80 in April last year, it's now £125.

Thanks for the response guys! I probably haven't picked up on the MKI / MKII factor. I was hoping that I may be able to afford one if I saved the pennies, I nearly choked on my tea when I checked the prices recently!
