Maybe a dumb question but here goes.

Due to it being winter and dark days my shutter speeds are very slow, now for hand held shots should I get a faster lens (Tamron 17-55 f2.8) or a speedlite flash gun.

I can't work out if using a flash will allow my up up the shutter speed or not using a Canon 30D

Depends on what you are shooting and when really WF ...

And Spring is coming and bound to bring better light very soon ... ;)

No such thing as a dumb question - only dumb answers. :)

Yes - your flashgun will enable you to use faster shutter speeds with your 300D, or any camera for that matter. However - if you're talking about low light photography where your shutter speed with the flash is going to be appreciably faster than you could obtain using just the ambient light, then the flash is going to be your main source of illumnation and is going to produce shots which shriek "Flash". That's fine if you're a reportage type tog or a member of the paparazzi, where you have to get a result no matter what, but not so good if you're looking for a more natural result.

So the short answer is... if it's low light work and you want to hand hold - go for the fast glass every time.
