Hi all, looking for a bit of help/advice. I'm a novice when it comes to dslr's, I've got a Sony A200 and I'm looking to
get a lens for it that would be suitable for taking shots primarily of my son playing football. As I'm a novice I'm not
wanting to pay too much, just something that'll get me started.

What should I be looking for length wise, would 200mm be long enough or would I need longer and what else should
I be looking for when buying a lens? All replies will be appreciated.

200mm will be more than enough. What's your budget?

At the cheap
End there's the Sony kit lens 55-200mm

Spend a little more and you can get great quality from the Tamron 70-300 usd and the Sony 55-300.

I used a Sony A200 for football pictures of my kids a few years back. IIRC I used a Sigma 70-300 APO quite a lot for football. There are also a lot of old Minolta lenses out that, have a look at the lens section on dyxum.com.

Have a look at the Minolta 75-300 Big Beer Can with focus limiter, this makes it quite fast focusing. Can be bought for £70. As above dyxum.com have very good reviews of most lenses.

Thanks for the reply Mark, not looking to spend much tbh and I know that will limit my options and the quality but it's just to get me started
so say no more than £100.

Cheers Richard, I bought the camera second hand, it came with two lenses and one of them was a Sigma 75-300 APO but when looking
through it it's "foggy", don't suppose it can be sorted?

Thanks, will have a look Roger, I was looking at the Minolta 70-210 beercan but was unsure if 210 was long enough.

If it's knackered anyway you could have a go at striping it. I used to do this quite a bit with the old Minolta lenses, buy them off ebay with fungus. Strip them, clean them and use them. Just keep the parts in order as you take them apart

I'd suggest the 70-210 f4 beercan - often available for around £50-£70, sharper than the 75-300, and with a stop faster max aperture at the long end. On the A200 this is the equivalent of 110-300mm.

This is a good shout.

Thanks for that, what is it that causes the "fog", and is it just a case of cleaning the inside of the glass?

Have been looking at them on ebay but wasn't sure if they'd be suitable for what I want, thanks for the heads up Toni.
