Does anyone know how much it should cost to fix an error 1 that has occurred on my canon 24-70 2.8ii ? It gave up on me during a wedding service on Saturday just before the "you may now kiss the bride" part ://

Maybe £0.

Error 01 basically means that the camera is having difficulty talking to the lens. It might be something as simple as the contacts on the camera and/or the lens needing to be cleaned, and that's definitely what you should try first.

Thanks for reply. I've tried cleaning contacts, looks like it's a bit more involved than that :/

Thanks, they look spotless though and I never touch them,I'm just wondering if there could be a loose connection or something like that,I've heard various reasons for it happening

I'd be amazed if it's dirty contacts much more likely something failed inside will probably be an easy fix for canon and a £200 bill for you. It's surprising how often lenses seem to have known faults that canon do nothing but profit out of like the shoddy ribbon in the 24-105

Thanks, looks like a trip to the menders then, something I could do without,it's only 2 years old, might be worth talking to calumet where I bought it

Got the same prob. My Canon 24 - 105 f4 L lens is showing the dreaded "Err 01" message. I'm guessing that it's the infamous ribbon cable problem, especially as the lens is fine a 24mm but faults when zoomed out. I only got it 2 weeks ago from Ebay and only shot 30 or 40 exps so I'm hoping the seller may do the decent thing.

More likely he noticed the signs that it was dying so used eBay to get shot of it before it died, happens all the time!

Might be worth a call / contact to Canon and see if they can offer any help as well ?

Mmmm ............ watched some Youtube videos on diy ribbon replacement, ribbon cost ...about 10 quid, check. Disassembly ....No way! I can do tractors, radios and cameras,if I don't have to touch the lens module but this is beyond my capabilities. Getting estimates :)

I had my 24-105 ribbon replaced by http://www.cam-rep.co.uk/ for £95 including insured delivery. Included a service and full clean as well since the whole lens has to come apart to replace the ribbon.
Thanks for the heads up on that John, I'll have a word with them, a service and clean as well, excellent!

Turn around was about 7 working days when I got mine done. He dropped me an email to say it had arrived, and then when it was ready. Paid by PayPal and it was sent RMSD and arrived next day.

I emailed Alan this afternoon, got a reply in about 10 mins! He's busy but will get on to it next week. Gives you confidence dealing with someone like that :)

Just a quick update on the err 01 on my 24-105,
Alan took delivery of the lens on Tuesday morning and has just emailed me to say that it is ready for it's return home. Cost is his flat rate of £95 which is a lot less than Canon 's service agents but I've full confidence that his repair will be just as good.
Added bonus was the seller of the lens has sent me an ex-gratia refund to help cover the cost; so top marks to all concerned!

My lens is with Alan , something mechanical wrong with it,new part ordered hopefully Alan can work his magic with it.

I'm sure he will, I got a nice surprise when I got back from shepherding this morning, my lens was home! Working purrrrrfectly :)
Let us know how you get on.

Sounds good service - what warranty does he give to his repairs ?

Sadly my 24-105 F4L developed this same fault over the weekend, I took it to Wex yesterday & explained to them about it being fine at 24MM but as you zoom out and use different apertures, it shows the Err 1 fault, also every so often it does look darker in the viewfinder, but then after about a minute there is a dodgy sounding click and it is light again. While they will be sending it to Fixation to be repaired, I really do hope that this fault is covered under the 1 year warranty on used products that I got with WEX, as I only bought the lens 2 months ago. :(

Should be especially if it's only 2 months old - to you

Yes is only 2 months, as I bought it on the 28th September & it gave the dreaded error on the afternoon of the 26th September, unfortunately by the time I got back home on Saturday, WEX had closed for the day, so I took it in yesterday. It cost me over £400 & to only have had it for such a short period of time is really gutting, so really hope that the warranty stands, as it hasn't had any knocks of what I know. The staff at WEX done a brief inspection and said they couldn't see any visible damage & that the ribbons seemed to be good. I don't know much about lens technology, so have no idea on what has happened to it, am only going by various reports online about the error.

Classic symptoms of the ribbon failure, it will sometimes mess with the diagphram control and not give an ERR01.The faults can be intermittant before the ribbon totallyfails.
I'm sure WEX will honour the warrantee.

Taking your lens back to the manufactory their are good and bad.

Bad: They will charge you possibly a lot more for the repair because the labour is higher, OEM parts for the repair and do a lens service whether you want it or not.

Good: Ensure everything is OEM, lens service (clean and ensure everything works), something to go back and complain if the job is not right and most likely you will win.

I have just been on the phone to WEX for tracking information & it turns out that there is no tracking information as it is under warranty & got sent to Fixation yesterday, if it was a chargeable repair under Wex Repair, then tracking information would be provided. I was then told that I am looking up to a month for a repair to be completed, so now have to play the waiting game.

I really hope that I don't get charged as it is really insulting paying over £400 for something & only had 2 months use out of it.

Relax. WEx have already told you it's under warranty.
