Now I have my D7200, I'm trying to select a decent but reasonably priced lens line up that will cover me for most situations. I have come up with this and was wondering what peoples opinions are and whether there is better quality or value out there.

Wide angle - Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 EX DC HSM

Standard zoom - Nikon 18-55 VRII (already have)

Telephoto - Nikon AF-S 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 IF ED VR

Macro - Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM

I reckon with careful buying second hand, I could get the lot for around £650.

First of all there is no such lens to cover everything. Each one is for a specific purpose . Of course cost is the big thing, getting something like the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 non VR lens ,which I have, seems to work in most situations so check it out. I have done a few of cruises and only needed that lens for landscape and people.

Unless you know what you are going to be shooting, we cant advise. No point having an UWA lens if you are shooting motorsport or birds.

I'd suggest it also depends on what you're shooting with them. I bought a D3300 with a Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 as a bundle deal, then tried using the Sigma for motorsports, and soon found it wasn't up to the task because it can't focus quick enough. For anything else it's fine, but I soon learned that focal length is only the first consideration! :D

edit: posted same time as nick!

Thanks for the replies guys. As for what I will be shooting, well when it comes to the lens I was concentrating on the following. It's a mixed bag to say the least, but I like all aspects of photography unfortunately. I can't stand being pigeonholed.

Wide angle - Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 EX DC HSM (landscapes, architecture)

Standard zoom - Nikon 18-55 VRII (already have) (street photography)

Telephoto - Nikon AF-S 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 IF ED VR (Wildlife, sports, the odd birding trip or two)

Macro - Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM (Macro stuff, mainly flora and fauna and portraits)

I appreciate there will be some overlap there.

yea, i went back to my 70-300 one weekend after loaning out the 70-200.... certainly helped me realize why paying for quality glass is worth it (sold it shortly afterwards too hahaha)
Interesting. Well it may be worth me putting the telephoto on the back burner a bit until I can afford a fast lens. I must admit, I'm quite taken with the Sigma 150-600 sport. I dont even think they are unreasonably priced. I've seen excellent condition used examples go on ebay for under a grand. At least then I'll have something of real quality, that will hopefully last a long long time.

Just get the contemporary.

You won't need the Sport and your back and arms will thank you.
