i have a sony a200 (i am also a newbie i may add ), i have a hood for my 75-300 lens which is completely round however i have seen others which are scallopped is their any difference between the two ? also could someone tell me what the letters p . a. s . m mean on the dial on my camera .

If the hood came with the lens it will be the correct hood for that lens.

The letters stand for:

p - program (auto) meaning aperture and shutter speed are set by the camera
a - aperture priority meaning that you set the aperture and the camera adjusts the shutter speed
s - shutter priority the opposite of "a"
m - manual meaning you set both the aperture and shutter

edit: darn - beat me to it.

The petal-shaped hoods can often be more effective, as they take into consideration the aspect ratio of the sensor (so there's more hood at the top and bottom, less at the sides, as this would appear in the shot).

However, if the front element turns as you focus, then obviously a petal shaped hood wouldn't work, so you need a round one!

with regards the lens hood its basically to prevent lens flare or glare, shape could be dependant on focal length, it might be picked up on very wide angle lenses.

You got to be quick in the photography game aberal, you can miss a shot in a second as well as been beaten on a forum

Never answered about the Lens hood there, guess you guys have already done that :(

thanks all, surprised at the quick and very usefull replies thanks again
