Managed to misplace the lens hood for my Canon 16-35mm F4 a few weeks ago. Was absolutely staggered to find that a genuine Canon replacement from Amazon UK costs in the region of £50!! £50 for a itsy, bitsy piece of plastic??? Seriously?? Managed to find it cheaper using www.curiua.com - Amazon Italy brought the price down to around £30 but even still I baulked at that price.... In the end I gambled on a compatible hood from Ebay for less than £10 knowing that it would have the nice flock lining inside the hood and would take an age to arrive.
In the end it took 2 weeks to arrive (not actually the slowest delivery experience I've had from Ebay!) I planned to line the inside of the hood myself with some sticky back flock that I already had - I figured that with it being quite a shallow hood it would be pretty easy to do....

Anyway, the actual hood itself was very well made. I was expecting some cheap plastic with rough edges and flimsy lock button but I was very happy with it. The lock button has the nice spring loaded mechanism as the original and the plastic is nicely finished. Now that I've lined it, it would be very hard to distinguish from the original - the markings would give it away.

Oh.... the original hood turned up 2 days before the replacement arrived. Might put some pics up later if anyone's interested!

Anyway... Rant about original Canon lens hoods over now!!

Canon hoods are incredibly expensive. I recently bought the Canon 50mm F1.8 STM and was amazed that the price was £97! Nikons equivalent can be had for around £140. Then filter in a hood at around £20 and the price difference is less substantial. So i bought a copy from eBay for £3. :D the pictures seemed to look ok so I'm hoping for a similar experience to yours.

Can i ask what the flock does/is for?

Thanks.

My cheap ebay Chinese copy lens hood for my Canon 50mm F1.8 STM arrived last Tuesday and it fits perfectly and works flawlessly.
There was no way I was going to buy the Canon hood not at the crazy price they wanted.
The flock just stops stray light bouncing around inside the hood.

Its pot luck with the ebay hoods though, cheap as they are. Some fit perfectly and some are naff.

You still save a packet though even if you bought a few till you got one right
