No
Do I need one?

If yes, when are they used?

What type(s) are there and which one should I get?

I currently have 18-55 canon lens and looking to get the 55-250. Both have the same thread so one to suit both would be preferable.

Thanks

Yes and always, both to protect against stray light (for better contrast) and for protection the day you accidentially drops your camera...

Doesn't your lenses come with hoods??

And btw. they are not using that thread, but clicks on on the outside of the lens.

The hoods would have to be different sizes to cope with the different focal lengths of the two lenses to be of any use.
And as said above, the lenses should come with hoods.

Always make sure you get the bayonet fitting ones, jjc on amazon tend to make very good copies of the canon ones.

No hood :(. It's the lens that came with the camera.

I've seen some strange shaped hoods? Are they better than the round ones or just do different things?

What about the rubber hoods I've seen?

speaking from making the errors myself, don't get the interesting petal shaped ones (i learnt the hard way) if your lens isn't designed for that or they start to appear in the corners, have a bit of googling and get the one that designed to go with your 18-55mm kit lens ie:

hope that helps

The hoods are not supplied with the 18-55 and 55-250 lenses.

Always use a hood if possible, good protection for lens as well.

All my Nikon zooms came supplied with hoods, I assumed Canon would do the same :)

L lenses do (they should!). Maybe Canon are hoping people will pay the over inflated prices for genuine Canon hoods. If they do there is some good money in that for them as something that would clearly cost £1 from China is never worth £30+

Generally yes, but using a hood with built in flash can cause shadows.

Canon's L lenses are supplied with hoods, but the others aren't and the OEM hoods are expensive (there are alternatives). This is a bone of contention because some of them, such as the f2.8 17-55mm, are priced right up in L lens territory. I don't know about other brands.

On a related note - is there ever a reason not to use a lens hood?

Or if you are using a CPL, or other filters.

I always have a hood on my lenses, they're very good for protection and great for cutting lens flare. The hoods are lens specific and if you check on the Canon website for the lenses you have it will list the correct hood for the lens. For kit lenses I got the hoods off ebay for around a fiver and even the 3rd party hoods fit and work well. The only lens I have that I don't use a hood is my 100 f2.8L macro as that usually has a ringflash on instead.

Some of the hoods for the L lenses run at over £50, but they usually come with the lens, but could get expensive if you damaged them. I dropped the hood from my 24-105 f4L the other day but luckily it bounced well.
