Hi all

I'm struggling to find a lens hood for my kit lens which is a Canon EF-S 18-55mm but it's an older version I think without IS, so the ones that are easily found via google on amazon won't fit. Apparently, according to reviews, that version has the fitting for 2 'lugs' on the end of the lens, whereas mine has 3 'lugs'.

I was looking for an official Canon one, but would a generic cheaper one be okay?

Any help much appreciated.

I had both non-is and IS kit lenses and the EW-63 pattern lens hood fitted both. I no longer have them so cannot double check the flanges but the lates IS STM kit lens usez an EW-63C hood so it may still be generic.

Thanks for the reply, that is the problem though, from what I read on the Amazon reviews for the EW-63C a few people were saying that that version has a two flange fitting, whereas my lens is three flange.

I think you will find that the less than £2 EW-63C non-OEM are generic to the kit lens family incl the Mk 1 (non II), Mk 2 (IS) and the Mk 3 (DC).

If you need the hood for protection and side light blocking you could use a cheap 58mm screw in petal hood till you bottom out the hood conumdrum.

Good idea, would I still be able to use a screw-in polariser filter with a screw-in type hood do you know? Also lens cap?

Depends on the filter. Some ultra thin filters only have only have lens side threads but some will just about take a pinch cap. Dual sided filter for the lens and screw in hood which should take a pinch cap. I have seen a cheap all in kit of filters, hood and caps. I would not recommend as both CPL and ND filters an cause strange colour casts. c
