I recently bought an E500 wth the standard 17.5-45mm lens, my first DSLR.
I am missing the zoom of my Fuji S5700 and someone recomended a longer lens. I was set on the cheap and chearful sigma 55-200, but after reading some reviews i've been put off this in favour of a 70-300mm lens. The only one I can find is the olympus one for around £250-300.

I have 2 questions:
1. Are there any other make lenses that will fit? if so where can i get one.
2. Is there any way of making a sigma lens (there are cheaper) for a different make of camera fit on my Olympus? ie an adaptor.

Could anyone tell me why sigma and tamron make loads of lenses for all other makes of camera.

thanks for any help

Hey Stig

You will do well with the Oly 70-300mm lens which is a cracker for the money. All shots here -> http://www.reflectingme.com/p28339871 were taken with it. Sigma do 4.3 fit for several of their lenses, the Bigma 50-500mm is one and is a very popular lens.

You might also like to take a look over on the Oly forum where you'll get a lot more support than you will on here.

Hi Stig.

As John says, the Oly 70-300mm is a cracking lens and he's had some particularly outstanding images from it - not all due just to the lens I hasten to add.

However, I can appreciate that the price might be just out of range at the moment and, although I know little of the Sigma you mention I have heard it is not one of their better lenses.

Unfortunately, there are few other options but at prices much lower than the Oly 70-300 (which is very reasonably priced for what it delivers) even if other third party optics were available it's doubtful if they'd be much better than the Sigma.

If you can live with a slightly shorter zoom range the Oly 40-150mm is a belter for the price and delivers the equivalent of 80-300mm on the 135 film format. I got mine on Ebay for £100 and I'm sure one would serve you well until you are able to invest in the 70-300mm.
