Please could someone tell me if the Sigma 70-300mm f4:5,6 APO DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens could be uesd on Nikon d50 and would it have to be a nikon mount or are they compatible thanks.
I use the lens on a D40X and I would see no problems why it wouldn't work on the D50.
As for whether you need the Nikon mount, you will do if your planning to use it with a Nikon body. I hope I havn't got the wrong end of the stick here!
Longer answer: Different brands of SLR cameras have different styles of lens mounts which are physically incompatible. In some instances it is possible to get adapters to allow you to use one type of lens on a different type of camera. However whether or not this is possible depends on how far from the sensor the lens is required to be - the "flange focal distance". The Wikipedia article to which I've linked explains this very well. The Nikon F mount and the Pentax K mount both require the lens to be at roughly the same distance from the sensor, so there simply is not room to put an adapter between the camera and the lens.
