Morning all.

I was shooting a drift event over the weekend as i have done many times this year which was fine and got some really good pics. However with the early nights now here the drifting carried on into the night and my pics just got worse and worse. 2 of the other togs on the day got some cracking pics after dark. I am looking for something that might help as at the moment i still have very basic gear and was using the kit lens from my 450d (18 - 55 Canon) I was wondering if the 50mm 1.8 might do a better job on a budget as with the 1.8 aperture i should be able to use faster shutter speeds for clearer pics.

Any advice is welcomed.

A prime will usually be sharper than a zoom, although I'm not sure about the Canon "nifty fifty". The extra speed of the prime should help AF and allow faster shutter speeds if you want/need them. As with most aspects, practise makes for better pics more than better kit can.

Your challenge is that you'll be wanting a fast focus lens (USM) so that AI Servo can keep up and track your moving subject. Could you go for a long exposure with a flash burst in the middle? That's something I'd be keen to try in night-time motorsports.

A fast aperture lens will be crucial for dark stuff too
