Hi,

ok so I have a wedding to shoot for a mate at work at the end of the month and I am looking to hire a lens from Stewart as I am limited to what I own just now, namely the 18-55 kit lens, 50mm F1.4 the Sigma 500mm ( not exactly practical ;) ) and a 580 EXII Flash.

So I was thinking I might hire a lens and was thinking along the lines of ....

17-40 F4 L

17-55 F2.8 IS

or 24-105 F4 IS

I use a 30D so I will possibly need to take the crop factor into account, it won't be a large wedding as my mate is paying for it himself so not a huge amount of guests but I was thinking the 24-105 might just about cover me for everything and save swapping lenses. My dad is helping out with candid shots and some backup for me.

I will be shooting in a small Chapel ( candle light only ) within a Castle and then outside in a grass covered courtyard and can do a wide shot looking down from the castle walls. I don't want to use the 18-55 if I can help it and I thought for the sake of £30 I would hire one of the ones listed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike.

canon 24-70L imo, i found myself at 50-70mm a hell of a lot for the candids and f/2.8 was a god send. I had no problem shooting the group shots at 24mm either. (36mm equivalent on my camera, 38mm equivalent on yours)

Ooooh, check you out with all your numbers and knowledge! ;)

I have never done a wedding, but i have to agree with Alexisonfire... it seems to be a popular choce :)

Good luck and have fun

24-70 2.8 if you need the 2.8

or

24-105 4.0 IS if you dont need 2.8 but need a longer reach.

As you have the 50 1.4 for low light shots.

Swap your Bigma for my 24-70mm 2.8 for the day! haha

a candle lit church, your prob gonna need the f2.8, as i dont think they will let you use flash during the ceremony, make sure you check it out first though.

In a candle-lit church i'd be wanting f/1.8 or f/1.4...

Out of those three lenses i'd go for the 17-55 f/2.8 for the range and speed. The 24-105 will give you more reach but you can always use your feet at a wedding.

I've done weddings with a 24-70 2.8 on a 30D and a 5D and it's so much more useful in the 5D as it gives you a decent wide angle and useable telephoto. 24mm on a crop just isn't wide enough to make it really versatile. On that basis I'd have to recommend the 17-55 which will cover a similar range on a crop body. The last wedding I did, out of the 750 photos I took around 600 were with the 24-70 on the 5D. You'll want the 2.8 as well so it's worth spending the extra money for the 2.8 and extra length over the 17-40. I also had a 70-200 on my 30D for telephoto but it spent most of the day hanging off my shoulder.

Forgot to say - the 50mm 1.4 will be really useful to you in the candle lit church so you should definitely have that one in the bag.

:agree: Forget any f4 lenses, they just aren't fast enough for anything inside unless you want to be using flash all the time.

Hi,

thanks for all the advice, I have decided on the 17-55 IS as it gives me F2.8 AND IS and it gets great reviews for image quality and sharpness so no excuses now :D

Mike.

Edit: just found out 17-55 IS not available for hire that week so that's the kibosh on that idea, oh well back to the drawing board :(
