Hey Folks,
I have just bought a canon 450d kit with the 18-55mm lens. Im thinking of upgrading to a newer wide angle lens around the £500 mark. Which lens would people reccomend?

Do you still want zoom or prime? Any idea of focal length or the subjects you want to shoot?

Damn good purchase there!! The 450d is a cracker!

Might as well get in first and mention the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
By all accounts a very fine lens for the money and haven't seen any bad reviews or complaints about it

Personally use an older Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DC, but they are very variable quality wise and great if you have a good one (I have)
The ones with "aspherical" on the lens seem to suffer from flare problems and its the later ones that are by all accounts better

It depends if you want an ultra wide angle lens or one with a similar field of view to your kit lens with just better IQ?

If you want an ultra wide, the choice is mainly between the Canon 10-22 and the Sigma 10-20. There are 12mm lenses which are still very wide, but you would be surprised how much wider the 10mm lenses are (2mm doesnt sound a lot but it makes a difference).

There are some very good 12mm + lenses from Tamron, Tokina and Sigma as well, all in your price bracket.

I have the Canon 10-22 which is very, very good, though is the most expensive of the bunch presently. You can get it around £400 2nd hand, and around £500 - £600 new.

I had the sigma 10-20 on my 400d and after a few months just did nt use it as much as I thought I would and sold it on....

If I need wider than 17mm (I have a 17-50 tamron mentioned above) then I always have the option of stitching a couple of photos together....

I would consider getting something a bit longer....55-250 or 70-200...they can be used for landscape shots too....(and candid portraits...and a bit of wildlife)

...or get something like the Canon 28-135 IS USM. Good walkabout lens, good for portraits, landscapes and even sport if the action isn't too far off (but I would recommend this as its my next purchase!!). Well within budget, and really, there's no point in blowing the whole budget in one go. This way you could get some polarising filters for some nice landscape shots, and maybe a good tripod.

I've been reading this thread, as I'm a new 450d user/abuser too, who's interested in a better/faster lens.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but have Tamron released the IS/VR/OS version of the 17-50 f2.8 yet?

Canon EF 17-40 f4 or EF-S 17-55 f2.8 would be obvious choices, read some reviews

They are releasing the Nikon version First.
I've not seen a release date as of yet and I'm also interested in the lens.
I'm keen to see how it will compared price wise with the Canon 17-55mm IS f/2.8.

Now that's a good idea as i have this lens and it is pretty damn good. Would 28mm be wide enough?? I have done a bit of landscape and it was wide enough for me.

For UWA I would go with the canon 10-22 or the Tokina 11-16. Depends on budget and whether you will benefit from the 2.8 aperture of the Tokina.

For wide angle zooms I'd probably look at a 17-40L, they can be had 2nd hand well within your budget.
In fact http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=166741 and spend the rest on a tripod maybe?

I would also recommend the 17-40L. I had one on my 400d and used it almost all the time. Wonderful colours, super sharp, and a useful range on a crop sensor. There is one for sale in the classified for £420.

I have jsut upgraded from the 17-85 kit lens to a 24-105L which is a fab bit of kit. I do not find the 24 to restrictive but admit I do have a Siggy 10-20 if I need uwa.

The flexibility, sharpness and IQ of the 24-105L is fantastic.

You can pick up "white box" new ones for £700 ish if you try hard!!

Is the 18-55 an IS? If so you should get about £100 for that on here or flebay so that nets only £100 over budget:lol:
