Lens focus in the cold

Yesterday I was out early in the morning with temps hovering around freezing. I hadn't been out that long, maybe 30 mins. I had my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR (the mk1) on the tripod and had been using it no issues at all. Then I tried switching the focus from near infinity to quite close and then all of a sudden it wouldn't AF at all. Which was a bit odd as its worked flawlessly since I bought it a year ago on my Z6 with FTZ adapter. I then discover that rotating the focus ring does nothing either. At which point my heart sinks as it seems it just died.

So I swap lenses and carry on shooting with sadness.

However since getting home the lens is now fine again. Manual and auto focus work and it seems back to normal. Was it just the cold? Or did switching the focus point so quickly and far screw something up mechanically? Is this a known issue with a fix and/or is it on its last legs?
