Hi,

My kind wife bought me a 40D for Christmas, I have a Sigma 17-70 already which I am happy with. I am going to Australia at the end of March for a wedding / holiday, I have been given the go ahead to purchase a new lens before we go but am struggling with my decision.
I have always wanted a 70-200 F4 and was thinking of buying this + a 1.4x converter. But then the Sigma 120-400 OS caught my attention as it's similiar in price but giving me OS and longer reach. Downside is, it's a hefty lens and I will have a gap from 70-120mm.

Would the 70-200 F4 and converter be ok for wildlife (excluding small birdies)?
Is the Sigma 120-400 anywhere near the quality of the Canon?

Cheers

the 70-200 f/4 is a very sharp lens and quick to af and therefor i assume with a 1.4 tc it will be good but it will then be a slow lens, f/5.6 throughout and will need good light and/or high isos.

in fact i just remembered i used the 1.4tc with this lens at the loop for an hour once and it preformed great, just slightly slower to af.

Maybe 70-200mm f/4 IS which is a sharper lens? It would take TC far better than the non-IS. I very rarely put TC on mine, the quality is acceptable, but not as good as plain lens, and f/5.6 non-IS is a total pain.
I never tried Sigma. IT would give a far better reach at 400mm for wildlife, but whether the quality degrades badly at 400mm you will need to research.

I got the Sigma 120-400 for my OH just a few days ago and we are both very impressed with the quality of both the lens and the optics. Also the image stabilization is very helpful, if a little noisy.

The images from the Sigma at 400mm compare VERY WELL with the ones of an a Canon 100-400 a friend has as well as the images from my 300mm+1.4TC combo

Thanks for the replies, I think the F4 IS is a little too expensive along with the 1.4TC for me. I suppose the a monopod would be very useful with that combination.
mcloi, do you have some sample shots you could post for me? I have been searching through flickr for shots taken with that lens, but you never know how much PP has been done with them.

Cheers

She only had the lens for a couple of days so not many photos yet but here is one she took today while we were taking our dog for a walk today.

I only converted the RAW to JPG, resized and compressed the image before I uploaded to photobucket.

No sharpening or other editing of any kind.
