Hi
I'm just after some advice and peoples thoughts

I've had a couple of shoots in a studio now with my 18-55 kit lens, I'm looking to buy a new lens and wondered what people think is the best for studio work?

Obviously like most people my finances are restricted so won't be able to spend thousands but just after some opinions please

I'm currently using a Canon 1100d

Thanks

Hmm a question with a multitude of possible answers.
What lengths are you predominantly shooting at and how much space do you have to play with.

As an example I normally shoot around the 135mm mark when I do my studio shots so you would think my lens choice would be a Canon 135mm L prime. In actual fact I use a 70-200mm f4. This lens gives me focal flexibility plus I don't need fast primes as I shoot at around f8-f10.

As Stuart says, it all depends on how much space you have, what sort of background you have etc. I guess Stuart might by on FF at 135mm. With your crop sensor you might like an 85mm 1.8 although I have done quite well in confined space with a 50mm on a crop.
Hope this helps.

What's wrong with your 18-55? In terms of focal length, that'll cover everything from head and shoulders to groups. For tight head shots, maybe something a little longer, 80-ish on APS-C, will give a longer/better working distance.

If you want shallower depth of field, then 50/1.8 is the cheapest option. Or 85/1.8.

It really depends on how much distance you have to subject and how much you want to play in post, using a wider angle close up can have some undesirable distortion effects on the subject

I tend to use a mix between 24-70 in the range of 50-70, 135 and my 70-200 depending on what and where I'm shooting.
