Hi,

Having just bought my 450d for christmas, i've only got the kit lens and ideally would like another (maybe 2) just to provide a bit more "capacity" (if that's the word) to take more photo opportunities.

My question is - would I be better looking around for some cheaper lenses that maybe aren't fantastic, or wait a bit with just the kit lens and buy one good lens once I can afford it? This might mean being with only one lens for quite a while. I'm looking for a zoom and a wide angle in particular.

As a side issue - If anyone has any cheap lenses that they might want to sell to a good home, please send me a PM!

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Dave.

It depends on what you like to photo, the kit lens maybe wide enough for your needs, if not then it would be worth looking at the Sigma 10-20, although you tend not to pick up many bargains on these and would expect to pay around £250.

If you want more reach then look at the Canon 55-250mm. This is supposed to be a pretty good lens and compliments the 18-55 you have pretty well, so you have covered the rangde 18-250. These can be had for around £180 and would be a good lens to get you started.

But once you start its hard to stop, so be prepared for the credit card to get hammered over the coming year(s).

Thanks for that. I'd seen the 55-250 and was thinking it might be a good idea.

I'll be photographing sport (football & mountain biking mainly), as well as landscapes/architecture and some general portrait and walking around pictures.

Whenever buying new lenses, I always think it's worthwhile buying the best you can afford.

If it means holding off buying one for a couple of months means you can afford a significantly better lens than now, then it's worth doing in my opinion.

As to what type of lens, it really is dependent on what sort of photography you do and what you miss in terms of range from your current kit. If you are always thinking "if only I could get closer" then the telephoto should be first on the list over the wide, but if it's the other way round, then the priority changes.

In essence, buy what you need, not what others say are the must haves.
