Lens and Exposure Details?

Being quite new to photography and particularly keen on birds (feathered sort), I look in awe at some of the photos in the bird forum.

It would be very interesting, and useful, to know what sort of lens and exposure details people use to get them.

Does this have to be listed on the post by the photographer themselves or is there a way to find out from the photo? Reading some posts this seems to be so.
 
Some of the pics contain the EXIF data that anyone can read. Google that and you'll find an exif data reader for your browser.

Other pics have that data removed (often by a photo storage site).

If there is no EXIF data just ask the original poster.
