Hi,

I currently use a Canon 650D, with a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, Canon EF 50mm f1.4 & Canon EFS 18-135 f3.5-5.6

As a small part of my job I use the camera for shooting external Civil Engineering / Building exteriors & interiors (I use Sigma 10-20mm for this), then I use the 18-135 for zooming into parts of a site I do not have access to, and the EF 50mm is used for getting more arty and detailed photo's of workmanship etc. Also when I am on holiday, I will generally just use the Canon 18-135mm for external architecture photos.

I am wanting to keep with the times and move over to mirrorless, but do not want to go full frame due to weight and bulk and cost of glass, and was not impressed with the lens line-up of 'M' Canon. I have tried out the Fujifilm XT-3 and love the ease of use and also the EVF is lovely, but I am struggling with choice of lenses as follows:

To start with I am thinking either A) XF10-24 (alternative to my Sigma 10-20) & XF55-200 (I was impressed from quality of images on christopher frost review) - I realise I am missing 18-55 style lens, but I will eventually fill that gap when I have saved up enough. From what I have read the XF55-200 is excellent quality for a zoom and will be better than my canon 18-135.

My alternative would be B) XF10-20 & XF16-80 - I read good & bad on the 16-80, so I am not sure. My question is, is this such a big step up from my Canon 18-135mm? then if so this might still be good for me. I also have heard not so good about the Fuji 18-130??

At some point in the future, I will buy a Fuji prime to replace the Canon EF 50mm as and when I have a project that needs it.

Any help is really appreciated :)

Thanks
Keith

If you don't feel you need an in-between prime for the moment, then the Fuji 10-24 and 55-200 are very solid lenses. I never owned the 10-24, 16mm on APSC is about as wide as I'd ever need, but by all accounts the 10-24 is excellent. I have owned the 55-200 and it punches well above it's price class. It's a bit brighter than most lenses in that range with the max aperture of f/4.8 at 200mm which helps to keep your ISO a little lower when shooting, and shutter speeds up. It's also got very good OIS built in, I remember getting sharp shots using it as low as 1/8th sec.

First of all - there's no need to keep with the times, if you're happy with the quality etc of your existing kit! Having said that the Fuji system is great and I'm glad I moved over from Canon last year...

I haven't used the 10-24mm, but I never really got on with ultra wide angle lenses on my Canon, but it would be the obvious replacement for the Sigma 10-20mm. I'm still saving up for the 55-200, but by all accounts it is a good lens. I do think you would be missing out on a "walkabout" lens with that combination though.

How about a set up of 10-24mm, 18-55mm (which is a great lens considering the price) and the XC 50-230mm for the telephoto shots?

I dont see the need to decide between mirrorless and DSLR either, chose the camera that best suits your needs if its mirrorless so be it

Im also a Fuji user because it balances a level of quality glass with and size/weight.

If you decide to go with an XT3 rough guide is £1250 for a body, £1599 with 18-55 its well worth getting the 18-55 in the kit as they are £300 used and £550 new

I have the 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200. I dont tend to need a walkabout lens - I either have the lot or have a plan as to what im shooting. I tend to use the 10-24 around 14-24 and then the 55-200. so probably wouldnt miss the 18-55 in the most part.

What I would say is you can adapt glass to fit so if money is the issue why not get a body and 1 lens then adapt your sigma for now

I moved from Canon to Fuji about 18 months ago, I don't regret it at all. As for lenses, I currently have the following:

10-24, 18-55, 56 1.2, 90 2, 50-140, 100-400. I really love the 10-24 and to be honest they are all good, if I could live without any it would be the 100-40.

Thanks Guys that's really helpful & a good insight.

Cheers

Keith

My Fuji (zoom) kit that lives in the bag is 10-24, 18-135 and 100-400 to keep as many bases covered in as few lenses as possible. The 18-55 is marginally sharper and a fraction faster but useless at 56 and beyond so the tiny sacrifices is worth it to me. I still have the 18-55 and 55-200 as well as a 50-230 but they seem to have taken up residence on the shelf alongside the couple of primes (which see occasional use but that's a rare outing for them).

Hi All,

I am thinking perhaps I need to compromise, for me the glass is most important, so a cheaper body for now and go for:

X-T30 with XF 18-55mm around £1124 inc cashback - Reason - The lens sounds very good quality for the price and versatility.
XF 10-24 £725 inc cashback - Reason - I use a wide lens a lot, so this will replace my sigma
XC 50-230 £200.00 - For me I take a long distance photo when I am struggling was access, so I can give this a go and at this price can always upgrade in the future.
So thats all in for around £2000, which is pretty much my budget.

I have thought about adapters, but I want autofocus as I am normally under time constraints so want the best chance of a good photo easily.

Any thoughts?

Thanks :)

TBH, I'd look for a cheaper, 2nd hand 50-230 and save for the better XF 55-200. I bought mine (50-230) as a lighter alternative to the 55-200 I already had with a little extra reach and have used it all of twice! Luckily it was fairly cheap 2nd hand but I'll be disposing of it at some point since it doesn't see any use. The 55-200 can stay on the shelf for the time being.

Hi Nod, I think that is what I will do, good idea!!

If you want cheaper than the XT3, have a look at the XT2. Some good deals on them now. I don’t think you will regret the Fuji. I had Nikon full frame, and got fed up carrying the weight. Very happy with my XT3 .

I was also going to suggest this!

XT2, 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200 will come in under £2k with MBP excellent grade used. If you can bide your time you can pick up bargains MBP £675 for 10-24, paid £525 for mine

Hi All,

An update, I tried out the XT-3 and X-T30 today, and with the deal they were offering, together with the cashback available just now decided to make the plunge and take the XT-3 as it simply handled the larger 10-24mm better, and even with my small hands it just felt better.

So, I got the XT-3 with kit XF 18-55 2.8-4 and 10-24.

I have taken some photos with my Canon & sigma 10-20mm and then with the Fuji with 10-24, same ISO, aperture etc (as close I could get). I've got to admit, the Fuji has blown me away. The sigma was my favourite lens and I thought it was sharp, but the Fuji is fantastic. Not had much time to play with the 18-55mm yet, but that seems a fine lens too!! I realise that I have paid more for the Fuji lenses than Canon, but I did not expect the sharpness & also ISO to be so much better.

What really surprised me is that the Fuji Jpeg photo exposure, colour, shadows etc does not need much editing, whilst to get my Canon Raw files to a similar standard same would need some processing. I'm looking forward to trying out the different colour modes.

Also, is it just me, or is the unboxing a particularly nice experience, kind reminds me of Apple but Fuji actually supplies a manual. The camera and lens feel really solid too.

I will keep an eye out for a second hand zoom lens.

I was very nervous making this purchase, worrying if it would it be as good as my canon etc, but I am pleasantly relieved :)

Thanks for your help guys :)

I was surprised how good a 5yr old X-T10 and an xc16-50 was compared to a 5D3 and L series 24/70 was. For crop sensor and kit lens the results are stunning. Glad you like you Fuji purchases.
