Are Quadlites powerful enough for in studio flower photography, Bouquets, arrangements?
In the Lencarta write up it describes the 80cm x 80cm softbox produces the equivelant of over 1600 watts of tungsten lighting. This means enough lighting at 1/0th f13 at iso 800, a metre away on full power. If two are used does this effect the settings? I would want to work at 100 iso for quality, could I do that? What AV and distance would be required for a bouquet covering an area, say 15" cubed. Would I also need a light tent?
Considering these as an alternative to going to expense of 300 lights.
Do you get more control, versatility with the 300s? They sound fantastic but I don't want to buy the wrong thing.

The Lencarta Quadlite is a good product (I would say that, wouldn't I):) but Advanced Photographer said it before I did, it came top in their group test - much more power and much better value than any of the other products tested.

I have one here and will happily set it up and measure it for power if you have specific concerns about this, but power really isn't the issue for still life photography, although it does become an issue for people photography.

The real issue is controlling the light. What you have here is an 80x80cm softbox. You can take the softbox off and use an umbrella instead, and you can change the power from all 4 bulbs to 2 bulbs, and that's it.

If you use flash instead, you can fit literally any kind of light modifier to the flash and get total control over the quality of the light.

So, read that long forum thread that Andy linked to

To Andy and Garry, thank you for your advice. I have scanned the recommended blog and will read it several times more to get it to stick. A fascinating article and highly insightful.

There are no shortcuts to quality photography. I'm not sure I will pursue the Quadlites now. Will save up and buy L 300s and studio accessories one bit at a time for greater flexibility.
Impetuously I put an ebay bid on a pair of bowens 400d monos the other day and really hope I get outbid now. Doh!

Boy is my head spinning.
Gary, are you running courses next year?

Many many thanks

Andy

Yes, you don't really want those old 400D's, good in their day but that was many days ago.

I haven't been told about the courses yet, they are run by Lencarta not but me, but I'm hoping that they will continue.
