Lencarta folding Octabox + 580EXII a realistic option

Hi all

I travel a lot with work. Most of my models shoots are done when I'm away on business. Sometimes I have a car full of work stuff and no room for my Lencarta safari kit.

I was thinking I could just bring one light stand, a folding softbox and have the 580EXII off camera through an S-fit adapter.

Would this be sufficient on HSS to light a model about 2m away from the flash @ f/2.0 ISO 100?

Just one thing, folding octoboxes fold up still pretty large, because unlike 'normal' softboxes, the ring is still attached to all of the spokes that go out into the corners, so it's a bit like a big long tube rather than normal softboxes that can fold up smaller.

Yeah - I have the softbox already, just wondered about the power really - would only use it for wide apertures.

I think you may struggle. However, seeing as you have two parts to the equation, why not do a Heath Robinson test?
Gaffa tape or bungee attach the speedlight into the mount of the box, and prop it up at the required distance from a target. At least you would get a definitive answer

Interesting idea - will the flash meter correctly measure HSS?

Oh the reason I was muttering about a flash meter was that I don't have to suspend the box on a stand then (which may be beyond the realms of gaffer tape)!

I can simply lie it on the floor to test it.

Yes, the test is about the eveness of the coverage and the power, getting the exposure right doesn't really matter - and in fact some degree of under-exposure would be a good idea, as it will demonstrate how even the light is quite well.

You'd be surprised what you can get away with when using gaffa tape :naughty:
 
Hi Phil,

Just a thought, wouldn't a folding strip softbox give you more options with just one output as well as being easier to handle?
