I have just purchased a Lencarta Smart flash 3 kit- and Wave sync Trigger and Receiver, with a soft-box and a shoot through brolly - lovely bit of kit

I am keen to try a beauty dish- I see there are 2 types on the Lencarta web site- one silver & one white, any reason for this?

I'm assuming the silver gives a harsher light or maybe I'm wrong- any advice guys - I shoot portraits in my small home studio

Thanks in advance

Les

You're right, the silver gives slightly more defined shadows. So is slightly less forgiving.
Bear in mind BD's aren't forgiving anyway.

I prefer softer shadows

It seems to me like your idea of getting a BG is not
based enough to bring you the hoped satisfaction.

The BD has in itself given characters that maybe not
what your looking for… except, maybe , with the bon-
net. Which means you'd be better off with a way more
practical and flexible 8, or 16 sided para- soft box with
removable front diffusor… if you like softer shadows.

For studio portraits, nowadays, I use very often a 1x4
stip box or two with grid that give a lot more control.

I have 2 large soft boxes and the BD I am ordering has the option of one of these also- https://www.lencarta.com/40cm-beauty-dish-diffuser-16-inch

I just want to try something different to shoot through Brollies - reflected brollies and soft-boxes :)

Thank you Phil- I'll order the white one I prefer softer shadows

I'm thinking this one- https://www.lencarta.com/white-70cm-beauty-dish-bowens-s-fit-27-inch
As above, don't think 'softer', I'm talking about every tiny micro shadow in a human complexion.
Garry calls them 'ugly dishes' and if you hold onto that thought it might help you remember how limited a use it has.
Specifically useful for young models with good skin. Though I like the look, you might find you'll be doing more PP than you'd intended.

The sound advice would be to stick with one or two modifiers at the most for a while and learn their characteristics before you move on. So much can be done with a single modifier or even just by bouncing your flash, by moving a reflective brolly closer or away from the flash, by flagging it etc. so you have hours of playing around to do yet. :)

All taken on board Phil - most of the models I shoot are under 25

Thanks you- I certainly have a lot to learn and many hours of "playing around" to do and I'm looking forward to it

Les :)

Sound advice? Wrong forum. It's light advice he's after :p

If one puts a bonnet on a BD, it is then not any better
than a small soft box without any control.

The suggested 8, or 16 sided silver para- soft box with
removable front diffusor would serve you better if you
aim for a roundish light source or the 1x4 gridded strip
for full figure and BG control.

Have a look here…

I have a beauty dish.......worked well with my young daughters but have also used it gridded with a diffusion sock over it - quite versatile!

Yes, that's one of my tricks - learned it from Marc Gougenheim :)

I prefer textured silver for a BD... if you're going for the BD look, might as well go all the way.

I have the white one. it arrived today. it came complete with a white diffuser too. Thank you Lencarta . I think I'll order a silver one too after the Easter break
