Hi all,

I have just recently purchased a Leica R4 (as i have loads of film i would like to use) and am now looking for a decent but hopefull not too expensive lens for it.

Does anyone know of where to possibly get one from? I would preferably like a large max aperture 1.5 - 2.8 not any smaller.

Any suggestions will be looked into.

Many thanks

Lee

And happy shooting

Think I'd go for a 50mmf2 summicron or a 28mm f2.8 Elmarit - though this may limit your photography so if you have to purchase just one lens then a 35-70 Vario elmarit would be my choice.

What's your actual budget? Whereabouts roughly do you live?

thanks for quick reply, my budget really depends on the lens and the quality of it.

Do you have any ideas where i could get any of the mentioned lenses.
I am currently residing in Northern Ireland but travel back to mainland frequently.

Many Thanks

Lee

Difficult to answer the questin without knowing what your personal preferences are. Do you like zoom or prime. Do you want long tele ( 200 mm or more) or short tele or wide?

As to prices; do you want 2.8 or 4 will do? It makes a huge difference in price. Just as an example : a 100 f 2.8 will cost you 800-1000£; and a 70 - 210 f 4 will cost you 300 - 500 £.

Have a look at ffordes for a reasonable collection of R lens.

When I got a R4; I got a 50 f2 summicron with it. Very sharp lens ( reputed to be one of the best 50 ever made). I then added a 35 - 70 VE for everyday use. I dont need long tele; but a 100 mm portrait lens is next on my shopping list

Hey all

Thanks for all the great replies. I would like to stick to prime lenses mainly but may opt for a zoom at a later date just simply for easyness of it. But for now i have looked at a 50mm f2 from ffordes, i have dealt with ffordes before as i use to live about 30 miles from there and had a vigtlander bessa, and i purchased a 50mm f1.4 lens for it from there. (what a lens) i have now added that 50mm for my leica to my basket, just need to check the funds. lol.

Thankyou for all the help, ant other advice or reccomendations will be mush appreciated.

Does anyone think this would be a good camera and lens to take to Namibia?

Thanks

Lee

Don't see why not.

I would try and get a polarizing filter as from the prictures I have seen it looks to be a bit sunny out there.

I have no idea what crime etc is like out there, but it might be worth consdering sticking some black tape over the Leica name, just to be on the safe side.

Thats a great choice of a lens Lee ( I am assuming its a summicron.)

Just be aware that its a very sharp lens, even open. You may wish to get a polariser ( as Knikki suggests), a yellow filter for b/w and a soft focus for portraits, especially in sunny Namibia
