Yes
And drove off on the second day of a 2 week trip to Scotland. Did about 200m before it flew off but the good old Nikon D60 survived! The corner is chipped off to reveal some wires, the small lens we have still fits on but is liable to become unconnected. The focus also searches more than previously when using our long range lens.

We were able to use it with the tripod to do some long exposures, but at least the weather was never good enough to attempt sunsets or night shots! ☔

We've been thinking about upgrading for a while and now we have a good excuse. Having been out of the loop with new cameras since I bought it in 2008, there are so many to choose from. We are happy to buy second hand.

Budget : £350 with basic lens ideally.

Shoot mainly wildlife (luckily the long lens was fine so got my shots of otters on Skye ) - but we want the focus built into the camera which we haven't had with the d60. Also shoot landscapes and occasionally family gatherings etc, so an all round camera. Not bothered about video.

Looked at d300 but at £200 think we can get a bit more for our money. Any suggestions?

Thanks all.

The Nikon D60 my first DSLR great little camera, but they tend not to like being dropped lol.

Well at least you're looking at the situation in the right way  If you want "more" than a D300 with a lens for that budget i would look at D7000 + 18-55mm VR second hand. Wex have a decent D7000 for £299 and MPB have an 18-55mm for £60, so £10 over budget but come on, it's pretty close  Wex also have 18-55mm in stock but they're a little dearer at £70, i would be tempted to make a phone call to them and try to haggle both for your £350 however

You could pick up the D7000 for that price, is a newer camera than the old trusted D300 and has the built in focus motor so will take both types of lens. It's the next model up from Nikons D90.

£350 should get you a decent second hand body, and possible lens. But others will be along to advise, I am not that well up on DSLR bodies, interested in compacts at the moment :)

EDIT

Some quick replies as I was posting lol

I've seen a few people do that with phones in car parks, they always fly off before you can warn them.

You may be able to get a D7100 (body only) used from here for roughly your budget. I would recommend something in the d7xxx series, the d300 is a good camera but the tech is older than the D7xxx series.

Great, some starting cameras to have a look at! Don't worry, we spent the first part of the trip in mourning

D7100 if you can find one in budget, failing that a D7000.

I actually left mine on the roof at Whinlater trail centre in the lakes... got down to the town (5miles) and it was still there! Thank god for a rubbery cover...

I see WEX has been recommended, the beauty of them is S/H gear comes with a 12 month warranty, and i would agree D7xxx series.

Yep, good store is Wex. I'd also recommend Harrison's who also provide a 12m warranty on used.

Have you spoken to your insurance company ?
When my daughter did that a few years ago, they replaced my old D50 with a D90

Checked our house insurance, the excess is £150 so don't think it is worth claiming if it makes future insurance more expensive. I like the sound of the d7000, the d7100 out of price range at the moment.

I'll have a look at wex now. How much attention should I pay to the shutter count? Should I aim to keep below a certain number?

Just shop around, check out camtech, ffordes, mpb photographic, mifsuds, park cameras, camera depot etc and see what the best spec you can get for your $$. Preferably the lower the shutter count the better

Not really, some shutters fail early and some last forever and there's no way of knowing what yours will do before it goes.

Don't you need 2 cameras, with all this "we" business going on..

ya ask em what they want from the chippy and they say, I'll just have a fish, you say are you sure, they say yes.....I'll have some of your chips
