Lee big stopper and STILL getting vignetting

I recently invested in the Lee big stopper system because of vignetting with the B+W110 ND associated with my Sigma 10-20mm lens.

I tried the new system out this weekend, it was just after sunset and ok, it was low light conditions, but the vignetting was even worse than the B+W, it was really promient in all 4 corners. I am so disappointed and upset as it's cost quite a lot of money to change to the Lee system.

I also bought the Lee wide angle adapter ring to fit the Sigma lens, so I did everything I was advised to do....but have ended up with an even bigger problem :-(

Can anyone throw any light on this please?

Thanks

Any sample images?

You've not left a UV filter on have you? I've not had any issues with vignetting on 18mm on FX.

How thick is your holder. I keep mine down to 2 slots and that helps with 17-40. Good point about UV - that would make the matter much worse.

I am rather surprised BW caused trouble, as it is just a single filter, unless it was the ancient very fat version.

Ps. when you apply lens correction in post, that should more or less get rid of the corners anyway.

Which holder are you using. I seem to remember a thread here in the past that to avoid vignetting on very wide angle lenses, you have to have only a single filter holder which means taking one (or two I can't remember which) holder slots off the kit. You can see an expanded diagram half way down this page: http://www.leefilters.com/index.php/camera/system

You want to configure it for one filter only at 10mm...

I'm guesing that what you're seeing is the natural vignetting you get using a ten-stopper on a super-wide.

Towards the edges and corners, the lens looks through the filter at an increasing angle, the filter is therefore thicker and darker - quite a lot darker! Correction in post processing may be your only option.

No I don't use a UV filter on this lens, I'll try and put a sample image up, I'm fairly new to this forum so not quite sure how to put a photo up yet!

I find using the lens corrections in LR4 a big help with this fwiw.

I've just been told about this, is all you do just select the lens you're using and it automatically adjusts it for you?

I'm using the Foundation kit holder, recommended by Robert White photography who I bought it from. It has just 2 slots on it and comes with some additional bits to add on, which I haven't added.

The B+W filter isn't old, I only bought it last year and the vignetting only occurs in the top right hand corner and it doesn't happen every time either which I don't understand...

Yes and no. Lightroom has lens profiles for just about every Sigma lens so it's a single click to sort out the lens' natural vignetting characteristics (also distortion and CA). But that won't fix anything else.

If the problem is mechanical vignetting, ie what you're seeing is the filter rim/holder in the corners, then you're stuck. But if it is the optical characteristics I posted about earlier then you need to custom-correct that with the vignetting slider. Easily done.

If you're using the lens at 10mm, I think you have to reduce that to 1 slot.

Thanks for your advice guys, I don't know how to upload a photo onto this thread directly from lightroom, so can't show you a sample, seems as though it's a problem I'll just have to learn how to correct in LR
