Hi,

This might be a really dumb question so please bear with me ... I have a D7000 and a Sigma 17-70, a Nikon 12-24 f4 and a 70-300. I was thinking that I should only get adaptors for the 12-24 and the 17-70 but not the 70-300. I will get a wide angle adaptor for the 12-24 but do I need to get a wide angle adaptor for the 17-70 or will a standard adaptor be ok?

For the sake of £18 (WEX price difference between the std. and WA adaptors at 77mm), I would get the WA one then cheap out and just get a stepping ring for the 70-300.

A step ring is simply a ring with different threads on the back (camera side) and front (subject side) so you can fit bigger filters to a smaller diameter lens. (You can fit smaller filters to larger diameter lenses but that will almost certainly cause vignetting!). If you have a 77mm diameter filter and your 70-300 lens has a 67mm filter thread, you could use a step ring to fit the 77mm filter to the 67mm diameter lens. The only problem is that it means the lens's hood won't be able to be used...
